Nurevis Chavar was the son of the former Lord Chancellor of the Ethuveraz, Uleris Chavar, cousin of Loran Duchenin, and nephew of Viscount Chavel. He befriended Maia Drazhar, but left the Untheileneise Court after his father's attempted coup.

Appearance[]

At the wake for Varenechibel IV, Nemolis Drazhar, Nazhira Drazhar, and Ciris Drazhar, Nurevis “was a young man, short and stocky like Chavar himself, but dressed in what even Maia could tell was the extreme of elegance, and with a brightness about him his father lacked.”[1] He vaguely looked like Uleris when he was shocked.[2]

When Nurevis met with Maia for the last time, he “was haggard, his ears low, and he was dressed in clothes nearly as shabby as those in which Maia had first come to court. His own wardrobe would also have gone to the auction house”.[2]

Personality[]

Nurevis was initially playful and friendly, and very diplomatic.[1] He had many friends.

After the Chavada lost their wealth due to Uleris' actions, Nurevis' mood dampened extensively, and he was abandoned by his friends.[2] He became awkward and undignified.

Life[]

Nurevis' mother died at some point before The Goblin Emperor.[2] Nurevis appeared to reside in the Chavadeise apartments at the Untheileneise Court, where he often threw parties.

At the wake for Varenechibel IV, Nemolis, Nazhira, and Ciris, Uleris approached Maia's throne with Nurevis in tow, and introduced Maia to him.[1] Nurevis apologized for Uleris' actions, and then offered to identify people in the room for Maia, which Maia accepted.

During Maia's first meeting with the Corazhas, Nurevis sent an invitation to the Alcethmeret, inviting Maia to an entertainment in the evening, where Nedaö Vechin would be performing.[3] After Maia dined with the Court for the first time, Maia attended the performance, and was entranced by her.[4] Nurevis then presented her to Maia. Nurevis then presented a line of courtiers to Maia, and eventually his cousin, Loran. Nurevis eventually rescued Maia from her, brought him a glass of metheglin, and introduced him to Nurevis' friends.

Nurevis invited Maia to more gatherings at the Chavadeise public rooms, and after Maia's engagement to Csethiro Ceredin, invited her as well.[5] For another gathering, Nurevis let Maia know that Nedaö wanted to see him, which led to Maia accepted her requests to meet with her sister, Avro Halezho, and the Clocksmiths' Guild of Zhaö, about bridging the Istandaärtha.[6]

Less than two weeks before Winternight, after Sheveän and Uleris talked one of Maia's Second Nohecharei, Dazhis Athmaza, into their employ, they used him to knock out Maia's other Second Nohecharei, Lieutenant Telimezh, and thus allow Sheveän's armsmen to kidnap Maia to the apartments of the Prince of the Untheileneise Court, Idra Drazhar, in an attempt to get Maia to abdicate.[7] The plan was to then send Maia to a monastery dedicated to Cstheio. Maia asked to meet with Idra, who disagreed with both conspirators' plans and ideology, and called on his armsman to turn against Sheveän, in time for the Untheileneise Guard to break down to the door to where Sheveän and Uleris were keeping Maia to rescue him. Uleris was arrested.

The day afterward, Maia had "a painful interview with Nurevis Chavar, all former friendliness gone".[8]

After Uleris' trial, where he was granted clemency by Maia and exiled to a Chavadeise estate in Thu-Athamar, Nurevis' uncle, the Viscount Chavel, mothballed the Chavadeise Court apartments, possibly with Nurevis' help, and sent Nurevis to Maia to announce the conclusion of their duties.[2] Nurevis' friends abandoned him, and Nurevis was left with very little (not even his wardrobe). Maia surprised Nurevis by apologizing for the state of affairs, and Nurevis admitted he was frightened. Nurevis then left Maia's presence.

Relationships[]

Viscount Chavel[]

Nurevis was seemingly not close with his uncle, nor was he his uncle's heir.[2]

Maia Drazhar[]

Maia and Nurevis had a comfortable friendship before Uleris' treason, and Maia regretted Nurevis' suffering.[2]

Uleris Chavar[]

Nurevis obeyed his father's whims, and did not push too hard against them, as Uleris always got his way in the end.[1] Nurevis also sometimes acted on his father's behalf (e.g., introducing Loran to Maia).[4]
