Eiru Berenar is the current Lord Chancellor of the Ethuveraz, and husband of Anzhevo Berenaran.

Personality[]

Eiru was a decisive man.[1] He was also compassionate and pragmatic, and helped Maia Drazhar when Maia needed it. He could also be highly critical, such as when he noted his opinion on the current Marquess Ceredel's lack of wisdom.[2]

Anzhevo noted that he was happiest and thrived when working on thorny problems.[3]

Life[]

Eiru married Anzhevo, and together they had children, who possibly grew to adulthood.[3] At some point, Eiru became the Witness for the Treasury on the Corazhas. He was “one of the five Lords Treasurer, only one step down from the Lord Chancellor.”[4]

Eiru served on the Corazhas through the end of the reign of Varenechibel IV, and later gave his oath of loyalty to Maia.[5] During the coronation, Maia noted that Eiru was not old enough to have given the oath more than once, implying that Eiru was not also a holdover from Varevesena's reign.

At Maia's first meeting with the Corazhas, when Lord Deshehar presented the idea for bridging the Istandaärtha, Eiru was one of the skeptical Witnesses on how the bridge was to function, and was mocking to Deshehar.[6]

When the Corazhas met to decide Maia's future empress, Eiru supported Csethiro Ceredin, along with Deshehar, Lord Pashavar, and Sonevet Athmaza, and Csethiro was ultimately chosen.[1] Eiru later met with Maia in private (with Csevet Aisava present), and noted that Maia lacked knowledge he needed to govern, and Lord Chancellor Uleris Chavar was not supplying it. Eiru offered to help educate Maia.[1] They began meeting weekly.

After Princess Sheveän Drazharan and Uleris' attempted coup, Maia successfully proposed Eiru to replace Uleris as Lord Chancellor, which was accepted, as Eiru was "universally respected".[7] The Corazhas agreed within an hour, and Eiru was sworn in. He then went to go untangle the snarl that was the Lord Chancellor's office. He was replaced as Witness for the Treasury by a younger, timid man.[8]

Eiru had not emerged from the office by the time the Clocksmiths' Guild of Zhaö made their presentation to the Corazhas.

During the ball to welcome Maru Sevraseched, the Great Avar of Barizhan, to the Court, when Maia had to leave to visit Aro Danivaran's deathbed, Csevet spoke with Eiru, who ensured that nothing would go amiss due to Maia's absence.[9]

Eiru sent Maia a message on Maia's 19th birthday, which included birthday wishes as well as a summary of Eiru's discoveries while mopping up the Lord Chancellor's office, concerning incompetence and corruption, and the pointless delay on the investigation into the destruction of the Wisdom of Choharo due to Uleris' prejudice.[3] Eiru asked for Maia's patience. When Csevet noted that Captain Volsharezh did Orimar's work in the Courier General's office while Orimar wasted away time, Maia asked Csevet to send his name to Eiru, so as to not clear away the good with the bad.

Meanwhile, Anzhevo and Eiru was in the midst of “moving the Berenadeise household from the apartments they had occupied for thirty years to the apartments which came with the Lord Chancellor’s office.”[3] Overall, Eiru was the happiest he'd been in his work since his children were small.

After Eshevis Tethimar attempted to murder Maia at the Winternight Ball, Csevet and Eiru worked to restore order. After Captain Vizhenka reported that he'd seen Eshevis speak to Count Solichel, Count Pazhis Nethenel and Mer Reshema, and Dach'osmer Odris Ubezhar, at least three of whom had connections to the Tethimada, and Csevet and Maia revealed that Thara Celehar had discovered a connection between the Tethimada and the destruction of the Wisdom of Choharo, Eiru was bewildered, and demanded to know why Maia hadn't shared this information earlier.

While Maia went to check on his nephew and nieces in the nursery, Captain Verer Orthema got into an argument with Eiru: Verer wanted to arrest all the Tethimada in the Court, as well as the men Vizhenka identified, while Eiru could not countenance it without Maia's direct order.[10] Maia sided with Eiru. Eiru attended the questioning of Pazhis, Reshema, and eventually Odris. When Maia noted that Pazhis was oddly nervous, Eiru voiced his disapproval of Pazhis' open involvement with his lover, Reshema. When Odris noted he "had nothing to do with it! It was all Eshevis' idea!", Eiru asked what he was referring to: the attempted assassination of Maia, or the assassination of Varenechibel IV? This made Odris panic and attempt to flee. He was detained, and spilled everything he knew. When Maia eventually asked if it was all right if he left, Eiru told him, "Please, go and sleep", and stayed behind to continue listening to Odris' revelations.

Eiru began to establish innocence as well as guilt, and advised Medo Ubezharan to seek a divorce so as to not fall with her husband, and sent Maia a summary of the investigation after Maia awoke. He later arrived in person to explain the sordid details of the Tethimadeise Conspiracy, and how he and Verer had planned to uproot the entire Conspiracy, and advised Maia to call the implicated house heads to come in and swear loyalty to Maia personality, distribute the Tethimadeise holdings amongst the Duke Tethimel's unmarried daughters, and have the house extirpated. Eiru also reported that the implicated Curneisei were remanded to the Judiciate, and that Maia could execute them without trial if he wished, which Maia refused. When Maia wished to visit them, Eiru joined with the others who failed to dissuade him.

Maru spoke firmly to Eiru (and Csevet) that Maia be allowed to have to time for himself or else go mad.

Skills[]

Eiru was a good and patient teacher.[11]

Relationships[]

Csevet Aisava[]

Eiru seemed to have a pleasant relationship with Csevet,[1] and they often worked together on different problems, particularly when it came to helping Maia.[3]

Lord Deshehar[]

Eiru frequently supported Deshehar in the Corazhas.[4]

Lord Isthanar[]

Isthanar was often at jealous odds with Eiru in the Corazhas.[4]

Maia Drazhar[]

Eiru “expected no favors in return" for his teachings, and he had not the slightest hesitation in disagreeing with his emperor, either in private or in the Verven’theileian. But he was never offended when Maia’s opinion did not march with his own. Of all the Corazhas, Berenar was the one Maia trusted most to be able to see beyond the self-interest and rhetoric that filled the Verven’theileian like fog.”[4] Maia supported him becoming the Lord Chancellor, and they grew to have a warm and even playful relationship.[10]

Uleris Chavar[]

Eiru seemed to disapprove of Uleris' out of touch way of handling - or not handling - his duties as Lord Chancellor.[3]

Quotations[]

  • To Maia: “A lack of knowledge is a remediable problem".[1]
  • To Csevet: “We see quite clearly that, through no fault of his own, the emperor lacks the knowledge he needs, and we thought that, having spent much of our life at court, we could supply the deficit.“[1]
  • “Berenar looked startled, then something illuminated his face that Maia shied away from understanding.”[10]

Trivia[]

  • Eiru had a personal secretary, who sometimes conversed with Csevet.[7]
